Under the slogan “We paid a lot – We shall not pay again”, thousands of workers, self-employed and unemployed people, farmers, women and students participated on Saturday 12th September at the large demonstration organized by the All-Workers Militant Front (PAME) and Trade Unions, on the occasion of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).

Behind the banners of the Trade Unions, Labor Centers and Federations, protesters from Thessaloniki and the broader region sent a militant message to the anti-people, anti-worker attack of the conservative New Democracy (ND) government.

The protesters also condemned the aggressive policy of the government and the EU towards refugees and migrants, holding a large banner with the slogan “Close down the hellhole of Moria – Release all refugees and migrants – Let them go to the countries of their destination”.

The demonstration took place under the necessary protection measures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the participants wearing face masks and keeping proper distancing.

A delegation of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), headed by General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas, attended the rally. In a statement to reporters, Koutsoumbas said the following:
“The working class, the Greek people can have no confidence at all to the ND government, to the other political parties, which instead of abolishing memorandum measures that they all together voted for, they, on the contrary, add new ones today, with Legislative Decrees, with fast-track procedures in the Parliament, thus reducing even further the people’s income, dissolving labor relations, abolishing long-time rights of all workers in all sectors. And all these happen sometimes under the pretext of the pandemic and sometimes under the pretext of the economic crisis.
Greece has today rich productive potential, technological and scientific potential and mainly has experienced, scientific labor power, which had do miracles if Greece’s wealth becomes social property integrated in a central scientific planning of the economy and services, free from imperialist agreements and shackles, with the people actually being in power.
This is the call we address today, this is the path we call the Greek people to fight on. To strengthen the working class-oriented movement, PAME and the social alliance of all popular forces towards an anti-capitalist, anti-monopoly direction, alongside the KKE”.
