Roman Roun elected new leader of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia

The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) has elected Roman Roun as its new chairman during the party's 12th Congress, held on 30-31 May, held amid growing anti-communist attacks and political pressure in the Czech Republic.

Roun succeeds Kateřina Konečná, who had led the party since 2021. The leadership transition comes after a difficult period for the Czech communists, marked by disappointing electoral results and the party's continued struggle to regain parliamentary representation.

According to the party, delegates elected Roun by a clear majority following discussions characterized by unity, constructive debate and a determination to strengthen the communist movement and restore a strong left-wing political presence in the country.

The Congress paid tribute to the outgoing leadership for its work during the previous period and expressed confidence in the new chairman's ability to lead the party in the struggles ahead. In its message following the election, the KSČM emphasized its commitment to bringing communist politics back to the forefront of Czech political life.
