The Jordanian Communist Party strongly condemns, in the harshest terms, the actions of the security authorities in arresting the two comrades, members of the Political Bureau, Dr. Omar Awad and Comrade Osama Zain Aldin, on the evening of Sunday 8 March 2026. The arrest was carried out in a crude manner and through arbitrary procedures, without any legal justification or grounds for this repressive measure.
The arrest of leading comrades in the party is nothing but a desperate attempt to pressure the Party to abandon its principled policies and positions regarding national and regional issues. It constitutes a blatant assault on the Jordanian Constitution and the laws regulating political life, as well as a clear violation of the commitments undertaken by the state under international conventions related to public freedoms and human rights —foremost among them the freedom of organization and political party activity, and the freedom of opinion and expression.
While we affirm that political and party activity is a fundamental Constitutional right that must not be infringed upon or diminished, we view these actions as a serious blow to political life and to the principle of the rule of law, and as an unacceptable attempt to restrict public freedoms and narrow the scope of legitimate political activity.
The Jordanian Communist Party condemns this arrest, which was carried out on political grounds, and demand the immediate release of the detained Comrades. We also hold the official authorities fully responsible for this action and its political and legal consequences, and stress the necessity of ending all forms of restrictions on party and trade union activity, and of respecting Constitutional rights and public freedoms.
We also call on political parties, national forces, and trade union and human rights organizations to raise their voices loudly for the release of political detainees, to confront the policies of repression and silencing, and to defend public freedoms and safeguard the right to political activity and party organization, as a fundamental condition for any genuine democratic political life.
