Arya Rajendran: India's youngest elected mayor is a communist

Arya Rajendran, a 21 year-old member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has been elected mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala.

Arya, a second year Mathematics student, is set to become the youngest person to hold a mayoral post in the country, the Hindustan Times reported. She presently serves as the state president of Balasangam, a children’s organisation affiliated to the CPI(M).

“I was into politics at a young age. If the party asks me to take to take up any role, I will be the happiest to accept it,” said Rajendran, pointing out that she has been significantly influenced by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and state Health Minister K K Shailaja.

In the recent local body elections held in Kerala, the Communist Party-led Left Democratic Front won the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for the second consecutive time. It swept 51 out of the city’s 100 wards. The results of the election were declared on December 16.
