Solidarity with Greek communist Mayor Kostas Peletidis- Fascism shall not pass!

The solidarity movement for the communist Mayor of Greece's third largest city is growing. Kostas Peletidis, the KKE-backed Mayor of Patras, is being litigated by the Ministry of Justice's Public Administration Body of Inspectors for refusing to provide public space to the neo-Nazi, fascist party of Golden Dawn.

More specifically, Peletidis has been charged with "breach of duty", because during the 2015 parliamentary elections he refused to provide municipal space for the gatherings of the neo-Nazis. Furthermore, the mayor refused to provide information to Golden Dawn's MPs about the number of migrant children attending Patras' municipal kindergartens.

The trial has been scheduled to take place today, Monday 13th of February 2017.

KKE: The Greek people must denounce and isolate the Nazi thugs of Golden Dawn

On the 17th of January 2017, thugs from the neo-Nazi party of “Golden Dawn”, at a time when the trial concerning the murderous activity of this fascist organization is continuing, gathered outside a school in one of the working class neighbourhoods of Piraeus. They intended to prevent the children of the refugees from attending the primary school.

Α group of about 20 members of the neo-Nazi party headed by Golden Dawn MP Yannis Lagos started quarreling intensely with parents and teachers ahead of the parents’ meeting which was expected to decide on whether to allow 22 child refugees to attend the school. The meeting was held with the participation of the mayor of Perama, the teachers and the parents.

SYRIZA's political "flirt" with Golden Dawn - When Social Democracy tries to "acquit" the Neonazi criminals

The political "love affair" between SYRIZA and the Nazis of Golden Dawn seems to continue. After the joint visit of SYRIZA and Golden Dawn's MPs in Kastelorizo- and the common photographs in the island- we had another episode in social democracy's effort to politically caress the neonazi murderers.

This time, SYRIZA MP and former Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos decided to proceed a step forward. During an interview with the conservative 'Vradyni' newspaper, Paraskevopoulos said that the Neonazi party must be supported by democratic parties if it decides to embrace the rule of democracy.

SYRIZA and Golden Dawn- When Social Democracy met with the Nazis

From the left to right: Ilias Kasidiaris (Golden Dawn), Nina Kasimati (SYRIZA), Dimitris Vitsas (Alternate Defense Minister, SYRIZA), Panos Kammenos (Defense Minister, ANEL), Eleni Avlonitou (SYRIZA).
The islands of Kastelorizo, Ro and Stroggyli in south-eastern Aegean was the destination of a short visit by Greece's Minister of Defense Panos Kammenos, the Chief of the General Staff Admiral V.Apostolakis and 9 members of the Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense. Among the members who accompanied Kamenos were 5 MPs from SYRIZA, 1 MP from the right-wing ANEL (Independent Greeks) party, 1 MP from the Center Union party and 2 members from the Nazi-fascist Golden Dawn!

43 years since the 1973 Athens Polytechnic Uprising against the military Junta

Mass rallies have been scheduled for today in many Greek cities in order to commemorate and honour the 43rd anniversary of the students and workers uprising in Athens, which is historically known as the Polytechnic Uprising. The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and the Communist Youth (KNE) have organised a large demonstration-march to the U.S. embassy in downtown Athens, as well as other rallies in major cities, including Thessaloniki, Patra, Larisa, Iraklio etc. This year's anniversary of the 1973 Polytechnic Uprising against the military Junta coincides with the visit of U.S. President Obama (15-16 November) in Greece and the SYRIZA-ANEL policy which involves the country deeper in the imperialist plans.

What follows is a brief historical review of the 1973 Polytechnic Uprising.

On the night of the 20th to the 21st of April 1967, the reactionary military circles of the country, which were closely connected to the secret services of the USA and NATO, conducted a military coup. The operation of the surrender of power to the army had been developed at the staff of NATO, under the code name "Prometheus". Colonels G. Papadopoulos and N. Makarezos, who were actively involved in the preparation of the coup, became known as "the black colonels".

Donald Trump: A choice of the capitalist establishment

EDITORIAL

The result of the U.S Presidential elections highlights the deep intensification of the contradictions within the bourgeois system of the United States. The victory of Donald Trump has been presented by many as an "anti-establishment" message of the American voters. There is a whole mechanism of media, both in the United States as well as in Europe, which tries to present Trump as the "epitomy of the American dream", as the successfull non-professional politician who is willing to clash with the U.S political establishment.

Olga Benário Prestes (1908-1942)

Olga Benário Prestes is an extraordinary- but not broadly known- case of a Brazilian communist hero. Olga was born in Munich, Germany as Olga Gutmann Benário, to a Jewish family. At the age of 15, In 1923, she joined the Communist Youth International and in 1928 she helped her husband and comrade Otto Braun's escape from Moabit prison. She went to Czechoslovakia and from there, reunited with Braun, to Moscow. As an active figure of the Communist Youth International, Olga undertakes several missions; in one of these she was briefly arrested in Britain accussed as a spy.

In 1934 she was tasked with helping the return to Brazil of Luís Carlos Prestes, the leader of the Communist Party of Brazil, to whom she was assigned as a bodyguard. In order to accomplish this mission, false papers were created stating that they were a Portuguese married couple. After a failed insurrection in November 1935, Benário and her husband went into hiding, and after barely escaping a police raid at Ipanema, they were both eventually arrested in January 1936, during the harsh anti-communist campaign declared after dictator Getúlio Vargas had proclaimed martial law and was already plotting the 1937 coup that would eventually lead to the institution of the fascist-like Estado Novo régime.

Pattakos: The death of an unrepentant fascist and criminal

Brigadier General Pattakos (left) with Colonel Papadopoulos.
 COMMENT:

One of the major participants in the 1967 military Coup d' etat in Greece, a hardline anticommunist and unrepentant fascist died on Sunday in Athens. His name was Stylianos Pattakos, a former Brigadier General who had a decisive role aside Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos in establishing a military Junta on April 21, 1967.

The Associated Press reported:

Stylianos Pattakos, the last survivor among the leaders of a 1967 coup that ruled Greece for seven years, has died at 103.
The state-run Athens News Agency reported that he died following a stroke Saturday. Pattakos was a brigadier general and commander of the armored forces stationed in Athens when he took a decisive part in the April 21, 1967, coup led by Col. George Papadopoulos.
He served as interior minister and, from 1971, as first deputy prime minister. He was later shunted aside by Papadopoulos who tried to liberalize the regime, which was ultimately halted by military hardliners. Pattakos was condemned to death in 1975 for his role in the coup, but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. He was discharged in 1990 for health reasons.

The banners of the Nazis deserve only one place: The dustbin of History

COMMENT:

The Golden Dawn flag waved by supporters of APOEL Nicosia during the football match against Olympiacos in Piraeus is a Nazi symbol. It is the symbol of a Nazi, fascist criminal organisation which tries to pose as a political party. It is a Nazi symbol because of Golden Dawn's Nazi ideology.

The issue isn't a typical matter related to UEFA policies about political messages in football. It's more than that. The shameful gesture of APOEL fans to wave the flag of Nazis consists a political and social issue. The symbols of Nazism and fascism, the symbols of Golden Dawn, have no place in football stadiums. They have no place anywhere.

Three years since the murder of Pavlos Fyssas by Golden Dawn Nazi thugs- Antifascist concert by KNE to take place in Piraeus on 17/9

It was the night of September 17th, 2013, at the western Athens district of Keratsini, when antifascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas was fatally stabbed three times by the nazi 'Golden Dawn' member Giorgos Roupakias. On the ocassion of the three years since the murder of Fyssas (also known by the nickname "Killah P"), the Piraeus Sectoral Organization of KNE (Communist Youth of Greece) organises an antifascist event on Saturday 17th in Pasalimani. The General Secretary of the CC of KKE Dimitris Koutsoumbas will attend the event.

The major slogan of the concert is "We don't forget! We fight fascism and the system that gives birth to it". The concert of KNE will take place in Pasalimani, Piraeus on Saturday 17/9 at 9 pm. Among the performers is the band "Rebellion Connexion". In a statement, among other things, the Piraeus Sectoral Organization of KNE points out: "The Goldendawnists (Golden Dawn members) are criminals because they are fascists. Their rotten ideology, the poison of racism, nationalism, xenophobia, is the womb which gives birth to their criminal activity (...) They are supporters of the exploitation system (...) The struggle of the people and of the youth will uproot the nazi- racist poison"

Fascism in Ukraine: Eurovision Song Contest winner 'Jamala' performed in neo-Nazi gathering

Left: Nazi collaborator and war criminal Stepan
Bandera; Right: Jamala at the 2016 ESC.
Her full name is Susana Jamaladinova, also known as 'Jamala'. She was the controversial winner of the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. According to news reports, Jamala performed in a Neo-Nazi youth music festival called "Banderstadt" in Lutsk, Ukraine. The festival, which took place from 5th to 7th August honors the notorious Ukrainian fascist, war criminal and Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera.

Jamala had triumphed in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest with a much controversial, politically motivated and certainly anti-communist, song called "1944" which had as a main theme the deportation of Crimean Tatars by Stalin. Of course, the song was by itself a distortion of history: Crimea's Tatars were deported because they were Nazi collaborators

Hate, Bigotry, Racism: The 'Jihadists' of the Greek Orthodox Church

SPECIAL TO IN DEFENSE OF COMMUNISM.

This is not a post about religion and faith. Historical materialism, as it has been analyzed in the works of Marx, Engels, Lenin and others, represents our perspective on the “opium of the people”. However, this article focuses on the Greek Orthodox Church as an institution and her high ranking representatives. Before going to our major issue, let us remind the following: a) according to article 3.1 of the Constitution of Greece (Hellenic Republic) “the prevailing religion in Greece is that of the Eastern Orthodox Church of Christ”, b) the Church of Greece is, in fact, an institution tied to the bourgeois Greek state, as long as priests (of all ranks) are civil servants and their salaries are paid from the State. c) the Church of Greece, with an estate of billion euros, is largely benefited by a series of tax exemptions.

The reactionary and regressive role of the Church of Greece through history is, more or less, known. Since the formation of the independent Greek state in 1830, the Orthodox Church has been always part of the establishment- from the Ottoman rule to the formation of the Kingdom of Greece and from the 1940s Nazi occupation to the 1967-1974 military dictatorship, the leadership of the Greek Orthodox Church played its role as a staunch ally of the established order.

Olympic Games and Fascism- The Olympic Deceit of the ‘Divine Baron’ Pierre de Coubertin

Olympism and Fascism.
By Ljubodrag Simonović.
Source: Excerpt from the book “The Olympic Deceit of the ‘Divine Baron’ – Pierre de Coubertin”
Posters: Vanja Zakanji.

As early as 1929, at the time of the great recession, “father” of the modern Olympic Games Pierre de Coubertin expressed his inclination towards authoritarian regimes, namely his discontent with the inefficiency of the capitalist system in its dealing with the working class :

"First of all, it was necessary to establish the International Olympic Committee with its basic rights, that should have been acknowledged by all the nations. This was not easy, because the Constitution of the Committee was opposed to the ideas of the time. It discarded the principle of delegation, so dear to our parliamentary democracies - the principle which, having done some great good, seems to be less efficient every day". (1)

It should also be noted that Coubertin was cordially accepted and his works published in fascist Germany, in spite of being "a great French patriot", a fact important at the time of German revanchism. Theodor Lewald, the president of the Organizing Committee of the Berlin Olympics, wrote of Coubertin at the end of his Introduction to "Olympische Erinnerungen", published in Berlin in 1938:

"He understood and enthusiastically saluted the development of the
new Germany under her Great Führer". (2)

Hitler's descendants: Trump supporters, White supremacists and Greek neo-Nazis

Special to In Defense of Communism.

In our post titled “Golden Dawn's Neo-Nazis's admiration for Donald Trump” (April 6) we had described the public admiration that known members of the Greek fascist organisation had expressed for the US Presidential candidate Donald Trump. There is plenty of evidence which shows a connection between far-right, fascist and racist groups in the two sides of the Atlantic; more specifically between American White supremacists and Greek neo-Nazis.

Before going to the ties of Golden Dawn's Nazis with US fascist groups, lets go back to June 2015 when 59 year-old John Russel Houser opened fire at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana. Two women, aged 21 and 33, were killed as a result of this. According to police investigation, Houser had a history of far-right ideas, being a member of the ultra-conservative Tea Party and an admirer of Adolf Hitler and Timothy McVeigh. A research on the web unveiled that, in one of his comments, Houser had praised Golden Dawn. Here is the part of his reference to the Greek nazi-criminal group:

Solzhenitsyn — The rotten legacy of a Fascist

By Nikos Mottas.

It was August 3, 2008 when the “Patriarch” of anti-communism, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, died. The writings of Solzhenitsyn became a major source of anti-Soviet hysteria and blatant slanders against the first socialist state. Even today, Solzhenitsyn's major work “The Gulag Archipelago” is, more or less, regarded as the anti-communist “bible” of the world's apologists of capitalism and anti-soviet propaganda.

The supposed “honest” testimonies of Solzhenitsyn- which he was never able to prove- were used in the building of an anti-stalinist, anti-communist obsession which the West had so much need to base upon, especially after the end of WW2.

However, who was really this nobel prize-winning Russian and how much credibility do his anti-soviet fairy tales contain?

Black Lives Matter- but, not in Capitalism

COMMENTARY:

The recent murder of 37-year old African American Alton Sterling by police in Louisiana is another tragic episode in the long chain of racist crimes in the U.S. The United States of America- the metropolis of Capitalism- has a devastating tradition of racial discrimination. A tradition of human chattel slavery back in the 18th and 19th century, of lynchings and mob violence against African-Americans, of racial segregation and discrimination against black people in the post WW2 decades.

Racism is an inseparable element of the capitalist exploitative system; it is in the very nature of Capitalism to produce, promote and feed racism. After all, the exploitation of the working class by the capitalists becomes easier and more effective when there are divisions among workers. For that, racism consists a valuable tool of the capitalist establishment in creating disunity within workers. What is best for the exploitative system rather than a splitted working class, filled with racist poison?

Writing for TIME magazine, after the murder of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, the former basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was correctly pointing out: And, unless we want the Ferguson atrocity to also be swallowed and become nothing more than an intestinal irritant to history, we have to address the situation not just as another act of systemic racism, but as what else it is: class warfare” (TIME, 17 Aug. 2014).

An Unholy Alliance: The ties of Social Democracy and the 'New Left' with NATO and Fascists in Ukraine

The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and its alliance with Ukrainian leftists supporting a pro-NATO course against Russia.

An unholy alliance of leftists supporting a pro-NATO course against RussiaBy Susann Witt-Stahl and Denis Kovalpublished in German in Junge Welt, June 25, 2016.

The Die Linke (Left Party)-affiliated Rosa Luxemburg Foundation wants to play it safe. It relies not on historical pro-Soviet or Marxist left traditions but instead promotes a “new left”. The foundation is named after a world-renowned icon of anti-capitalist movements whose identity is bound with communist and anti-imperialist ideas. But the members of the Foundation’s leadership recommend to the left a convergence with the ‘liberal imperialism’ of the global hegemon, the USA.

Understandably, this requires some political flexibility. Progressive forces should not plant themselves on one side or the other of competing imperialist powers, says the Facebook page Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Ukraine. It demands that the “independent left” distance itself from the NATO-EU bloc, on the one hand, and from Russia on the other hand.
